Frequently asked questions

Is Mangal to DevLys the same as Unicode to DevLys?
Yes. Mangal is a Unicode font, not a separate encoding, so text set in Mangal is already Unicode. This page and Unicode to DevLys run exactly the same conversion - this one exists because people arrive having been told their source is "Mangal".
Why are there two copy buttons?
Because the output box is showing you one thing and holding another. It reads as Hindi only because the DevLys font is drawing ASCII keys. Copy DevLys code gives the raw keys for Word. Copy as Hindi (Unicode) gives the Unicode back. Both are generated so you never have to guess which one the clipboard took.
The output looks like Latin gibberish. Is it broken?
No - that is what DevLys is. The font turns Hkkjr into भारत. Use the Preview / Raw toggle above the output to switch how it is displayed. The toggle is purely visual and never changes what gets copied.
Do I need the DevLys font installed?
To use the result in Word, yes: install DevLys 010 and apply it to the pasted text, or press Download .docx and the font name is written into the file for you. Nothing needs installing to see the preview here.
Why would I convert modern Hindi back to a legacy font?
Usually because something downstream has not moved on: a press or publishing workflow built around DevLys, a form whose layout was designed for it, an archive that has to stay consistent, or a typing test that is marked in the legacy layout.
Does my text get uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.

What this converter does

If your text is set in Mangal, it is already Unicode - Mangal is a Unicode font that ships with Windows, not an encoding of its own. What you need is the step after that: turning Unicode Hindi into the ASCII keystrokes the DevLys font expects. That is what this page does.

The output will look like nonsense Latin text. That is correct and it is the whole point: DevLys stores Hindi as ASCII and leaves the drawing to the font. Paste it into Word, apply DevLys 010, and it reads as Hindi.

The reordering, in reverse

Unicode keeps Hindi in logical order and DevLys keeps it in visual order, so this direction has to undo every rearrangement the forward one applies:

  • The short-i matra moves back in front of its consonant - कि becomes fd.
  • The reph moves back after the cluster it sits on, so कर्म becomes deZ.
  • Composed vowel signs split apart again: को becomes an aa-matra plus an e-matra.

Text converted to DevLys and back arrives unchanged, punctuation included - that round trip is part of the test suite rather than something you have to take on trust.

Why this page is live now

DevLys 010 and Kruti Dev 010 share a keyboard layout, and that overlap was verified rather than assumed: every character code this converter can emit was read out of both font files and compared. All of them match. The two fonts do differ in one block of character codes, and the conversion table never uses it - which is precisely why this page could go live while the Chanakya ones could not.
