Common problems & fixes

Every key I press is marked wrong
Check that Windows is set to the English keyboard, not a Hindi one: the tutor reads English keys and checks them against the Remington keystrokes. Then check Caps Lock.
Capital letters give the wrong Hindi
Capitals are the Shift layer, so Caps Lock changes every letter. Turn it off and hold Shift with the little finger of the other hand instead.
My speed has stopped improving
Slow down until you are above 95% accurate for a week, then return to full-length tests. The speed tips guide has a four-week plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Hindi typing tutor free?
Yes. No signup, no limit on attempts, no paid tier. It is a static page that runs in your browser, so there is nothing to charge for and nothing to log in to.
How long are the tests?
Practice tests run for 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours, and there is enough queued text that you cannot run out even at 60 words per minute. The long options are there because departmental and court typing papers run far past the ten minutes a speed test needs, and stamina is a separate skill from speed - a typist who is comfortable for one minute is often finished by minute eight. A test that long does reuse paragraphs, since the passage pool is finite. Lessons have no clock at all: the timer counts up and the drill ends when you have typed it.
How is WPM calculated?
Five keystrokes count as one word, which is the convention every typing test uses and the only fair way to compare a Devanagari passage with a Latin one. The headline number is net WPM - correct keystrokes only. The result card also shows gross WPM, which counts every keystroke whether it was right or not. Exams score net.
Is my typing sent anywhere?
No. The passage, the clock, your score and your lesson progress all stay in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and no result is recorded anywhere we can see. Progress is kept in your own browser storage on this device and goes away if you clear your browsing data.

A tutor, not just a test

Most Hindi typing pages hand you a paragraph and a clock. That measures where you are, but it does not move you. This one teaches the layout: the key you need next is lit on the keyboard, the finger that should press it is coloured on the hands, and the passage marks every akshara green or red as you go. When a letter needs Shift, it also shows which little finger should be holding it.

The passage is ordinary Unicode Hindi, so it renders on any machine with nothing installed. What the tutor checks underneath is the Kruti Dev keystrokes that produce it, worked out by the same conversion engine that powers the converters on this site - so what you read and what you press are guaranteed to be the same sentence.

The lessons

Eleven levels. The first five each open one more row. Level 1 is the home row alone - क, स, र, ह, य and four matras, all typed without moving a finger off its resting key. Then the top row, the bottom row, numbers, and Shift.

Once every key is reachable the levels stop being about rows and start being about the script. Level 6 is the matras - ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ - on consonants you already know, so the only new thing on screen is the vowel sign and the rule that ि is typed before its letter. Level 7 drills the letters with no key of their own - भ, श, ष, ण, ध, ख, घ, झ, थ - which are two keystrokes each and are where most Kruti Dev typists quietly lose their speed. Level 8 is the four conjuncts क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र, which look like new letters and are not: they are built from letters you have, with the halant you already use. Levels 9 to 11 are everyday words, sentences and finally paragraphs.

A level unlocks the next when you type the whole drill at its accuracy target. Speed is recorded but never required, because gating on speed teaches you to rush a drill you have not learned yet.
