Which finger presses Shift?
The little finger of the other hand. For a letter typed with the left hand, hold Shift with the right little finger, and the other way round - holding Shift with the same hand is the most common beginner mistake.
Why do the index fingers have so many keys?
Each index finger covers two columns, so it owns eight keys, not four. Those are also the easiest reaches, which is why many common Hindi letters sit there.
Why fingers matter
Speed in a typing test comes from never looking down, and that only works if every key always belongs to the same finger. Beginners who type with two fingers plateau early. Learners preparing for SSC, CPCT or court typing tests should fix the finger for each key before chasing speed.
