Common problems & fixes

Word still shows English letters after I set the font: Kruti Dev 010 is not installed on that computer, or the text is set in a variant with a different name. Install 010 - see the Kruti Dev 010 font page.
Text copied from a PDF converts into nonsense: Many PDFs give out letters in visual order or as private symbols, so the copied "Unicode" is not real Hindi. Copy from the original Word file or web page instead.
A matra sits on the wrong letter: The Unicode was typed out of order - on a phone, say. The converter keeps the text as typed. Correct the word in the Mangal text and convert again.
English words in the text look like Hindi: The Kruti Dev font draws every English letter as a Hindi one. After pasting into Word, give the English words an English font.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as "Mangal" text for this converter?

Any Unicode Hindi. Mangal is a font rather than an encoding, so text displayed in Mangal, Nirmala UI, Noto Sans Devanagari, Aparajita or Kokila is all the same underlying Unicode. Paste from a Word file, a website, a PDF or WhatsApp. It all works.

The output is English letters, not Hindi. What went wrong?

Nothing. Kruti Dev text is ASCII, and it only becomes Hindi once the Kruti Dev font is applied. Use the Download .docx button, which sets the font for you, or paste into Word and choose Kruti Dev 010 from the font list.

Why would anyone convert Unicode back to a legacy font?

Typing tests and stenography exams in several states are still conducted in Kruti Dev, so candidates need practice passages in it. Printing presses and DTP operators often have decades of Kruti Dev templates. And offices regularly receive a Unicode draft that has to be dropped into an old legacy-font layout.

Will my numbers and dates survive?

Yes. Numbers, dates, percentages, URLs and email addresses are left exactly as they are by default. That matters here, because converting the digits in an account number or an order date would corrupt it silently. The checkbox under the panels turns this off if you actually want Devanagari numerals.

Does it handle conjuncts and the reph?

Yes. The i-matra is moved back to the front of its cluster, the reph is moved to the end of its syllable, composed vowel signs are split back into the two glyphs Kruti Dev draws them with, and क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र plus the nukta letters are all mapped.

Do I need Mangal installed?

No. You need a Devanagari font to read the input panel, and almost every modern device has one. You do not need Mangal specifically, and you do not need it installed for the conversion itself.

Mangal to Kruti Dev in one step

Mangal is a Unicode font, so "Mangal text" is just Unicode Hindi: the same text you would get from a website, a modern Word document or a WhatsApp message. Kruti Dev is a legacy font that stores Hindi as ASCII in visual order. Going from one to the other means undoing every reordering rule that Unicode applies.

That is what this page does as you type: short-i signs move back in front of their consonants, rephs move to the end of their syllables, composed vowel signs like ो split back into their two drawn parts, and half letters are re-encoded to the separate glyphs Kruti Dev uses for them.

Reading the output

The right-hand panel will look like nonsense English, something along the lines of Hkkjr. That is correct and expected. Kruti Dev text only becomes Hindi when the Kruti Dev font is applied to it. Two ways to get there:

Download .docx. The Word file comes out with Kruti Dev already applied to every paragraph.
Copy Kruti code, paste into your document, select it, and set the font to Kruti Dev 010.

Typing tests and legacy templates

The most common reason people need this direction is exam practice. Several court, district and state clerical typing tests still set Hindi typing in Kruti Dev, while practice passages are almost always published as Unicode. Converting them here gives you material in the font those exams use. CPCT is different: it offers InScript or a Unicode version of the Remington layout, so check its own key chart.

The other common reason is production work. A press with twenty years of Kruti Dev layouts cannot re-set them all in Unicode, so incoming Unicode copy has to be converted to fit the existing template.

Round-tripping

Kruti Dev frequently offers more than one key sequence for the same letter, so the output here uses one canonical spelling rather than reproducing exactly what a human typist would have pressed. It renders identically, and running it back through the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter returns the text you started with.
